Have a rowdy glass of cava then retreat to a vegetarian haven all in the same street

Sit yourself at the bar of Can Paixano (La Xampanyeria) – or more realistically stand shoulder to shoulder – and enjoy a glass of sparkling cava with locals. Ham and industrial design lamps hang from the wooden rafters in this buzzing, characterful delicatessen-cum-cava cellar founded in 1969. You could try the ultra-tasty sandwiches and various tapas here or save yourself for our next stop.

Only a few steps away but miles away in terms of ambience, is The Green Spot, whose ship galley appearance is in keeping with its proximity to Port Vell. A long oak panelled corridor leads to the dining area, which exudes monastic peace with its celestial cross-vault ceiling of low white-stone arches, soft lighting and interior garden.

The Green Spot aims to please and their motto ‘veggie for veggies, veggie for non veggies’ sums up the wide appeal of the vegetarian and vegan creations here. The tasty fare includes spinach and chard or black bean burger with pretzel bread, various macrobiotic options, Japanese seaweed salad with Umeboshi sesame vinaigrette, or you can just go for a simple dish of wild greens with peas and avocado. The veggie burgers are served with colourful dips resembling pots of pastel paint. They all marry perfectly well with a glass of organic DO Garnacha, a denominación de origen Grenache from the Penedès wine-growing region southwest of the city. Then dessert on carrot cake with a cashew and vanilla frosting or a refreshing lemon and celery sorbet.

And as you could expect from such a trendy place, there is live music Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
